THE MYTH BEHIND THE SIGN

The twin brothers Castor and Pollux were sons of Queen Leda of Sparta, but with different fathers. Pollux was the son of the highest god Jupiter, who had seduced Leda in the shape of a swan. Castor, however, was the son of King Tyndareus of Sparta. And so, Pollux was immortal while Castor was mortal.

The boys were inseparable, never leaving each other’s side. But one day, the got into a fight with another twin pair – Idas and Lynceus. Castor fell by a mortal stab from the sword of Lynceus. Pollux killed Lynceus, and Jupiter intervened and killed Idas with a lightning.

Pollux was inconsolable after his brother’s death, and begged to Jupiter that his brother would share his immortality. Jupiter had mercy on him, and united the twins forever in the star sign of Gemini.
